Geothermal Resource Assesment
History Match & Development Plan

Customer Challenge

The client holds a geothermal production license in the Eastern Europe, boasting four active wells with water temperatures ranging from 80°C to 100°C, sourced from a Senonian reservoir at a depth of 3km. With four decades of successful production, the client aims to expand their geothermal activities while optimizing their existing production. To further de-risk the necessary capital allocated to this endeavor, a comprehensive subsurface assessment and a well-defined development plan are essential, even in the face of limited subsurface data.

Solution

Collaborating with a Geneva Earth Resources, Vulcania Energy embarked on constructing a high-fidelity representation of the subsurface. An essential step was achieving a satisfactory History Match, meticulously QC’ed via forecast blindtests, pressure-vs.-rate-controlled results, and fine-tuning of reservoir engineering parameters with a focus on geological realism. The team then simulated the immediate and 20-year production gains of 11 drilling and completion operation scenarios, ranking and comparing them to a No Further Action scenario.

Outcome & Value Delivery

Through wellbore models and comprehensive field simulation, it was evident that two simple well interventions – tubing change and borehole clean-up – could significantly boost the current production by +55% within less than a year. By additionally deepening one of the inactive wells, serving dual purposes of production enhancement and appraisal of deeper and southernmost reservoirs, production could ultimately be more than doubled with sustainable flow rate increase even after 15 years.

To ensure long-term sustainability and avoid undesirable pressure regimes, Vulcania Energy & Geneva Earth Resources proposed avoiding the rapid deployment of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs). Instead, the acquisition of Borehole Image (BHI) and 2D seismic lines were recommended as crucial tools to de-risk future field extensions and pinpoint fracture-controlled reservoir sweetspots, providing substantial value to the client’s geothermal asset. The comprehensive geothermal resource assessment and development plan paved the way for future success, securing capital allocation and enabling the client to optimize their geothermal production while planning for long-term expansion and growth.
