Customer Challenge
Navigating a complex mixed lithology Albian reservoir poses considerable challenges, with a previously drilled technical discovery yet to achieve commercial success. The high level of subsurface heterogeneity and the intricate interplay between clastic and carbonate beds have hindered progress. Seeking expert guidance, the client turns to Vulcania Energy to assess the potential lateral continuity of these deposits and explore the feasibility of a new appraisal well.

Solution
To address the uncertainties surrounding the reservoir, a new geological concept was introduced, considering a more proximal analog akin to the shallow lagoons of Abu Dhabi, UAE, as opposed to the previously suggested distal carbonate environment occasionally overlaid by clastic sediments from deep marine currents. Leveraging this innovative approach, Vulcania Energy identified tidal bars/channel at the well and successfully modeled their seismic signatures. This involved constructing seismograms and extracting data in 3D using a set of advanced seismic attributes and auto-tracking tools.
Outcome & Value Delivery
Through the seamless integration of various geoscientific disciplines, Vulcania Energy could identify a thickening tidal bars/channel geobody in the middle Albian reservoir which none of the previous operators had appraised. Based on the extracted amplitudes and known OWC, Vulcania Energy was able to estimate the presence of substantial 75m-thick potential resources in the range of 145mmstb. The study not enabled the well placement optimization of a future appraisal well but also provided a set of stronger justification to get the investor and partners approval to drill.
